PHILADELPHIA -- Charlie Manuel has returned to the Philadelphia Phillies as a senior adviser to general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. Manuel was offered a position the day he was fired. He accepted earlier this week and the team made the announcement Friday. Manuel led the Phillies to the 2008 World Series title, five division championships and two NL pennants from 2005-13. His 780 victories are more than any manager in franchise history. The 70-year-old Manuel will work with minor league hitters, scout at the major and minor levels and serve as a consultant for the baseball operations staff. Before becoming the teams manager, Manuel , spent two years working for the Phillies as a special assistant to then-GM Ed Wade. "Charlie obviously brings a wealth of knowledge and is someone who had an historic impact on not just our organization, but on all Phillies fans," Amaro says. "We couldnt be happier to have him back in the fold with us and sharing his expertise and insight throughout the organization." The Phillies also reached a one-year deal with outfielder John Mayberry Jr. for $1,587,500. They exchanged salary arbitration figures with outfielder Ben Revere, offering $1.4 million while he sought $2,425,000, and reliever Antonio Bastardo, who asked for $2.5 million to the teams $1,675,000. The NHL has postponed the game scheduled for Tuesday night in Buffalo between the Sabres and Carolina because of a snowstorm in western New York. A makeup date has not been determined. The postponement comes with Buffalo dealing with a wintry blast of near-zero temperatures, heavy winds and blinding snow that has forced the closure of most major roadways. The last time the Sabres had a game postponed was at Buffalo against New Jersey on Dec. 6, 2000. They played the following day. The Hurricanes (18-16-9), coming off four straight wins, got to Buffalo before the brunt of the storm hit Monday afternoon. The weather, however, prevented both teams from holding their usual morning pregame skaates.dddddddddddd Hurricanes spokesman Mike Sundheim said the team will stay in Buffalo overnight and travel home on Wednesday. Rescheduling the game could prove difficult in the near future. The Hurricanes host Toronto on Thursday, before travelling to play Columbus on Friday. Starting Thursday, Carolina plays 14 games in 31 days leading up to the NHLs Olympic break. The Hurricanes only extended break during that stretch is a four-day span which conflicts with the Sabres playing two games. Buffalo (12-26-4) next plays at home against Florida on Thursday, which opens a stretch in which the team plays 15 games in 29 days. The Sabres have won five straight at home, their longest streak since winning six in a row from Jan. 17-Feb. 15, 2007.
